Lately, a photo of a security guard made its rounds in social media. The said photo was taken inside a pawnshop. On the heartbreaking photos, the unidentified security guard was spotted taking his lunch while standing.
The viral photos were once again shared on Facebook on October 1st by netizen West Claire. In her heartfelt post, Claire said that the man on the photos chose to eat his lunch while standing to prevent him from abandoning his post.
The unknown security guard’s dedication to his job tugged the heartstrings of people on Facebook.
As of this writing, Claire’s post which has been reposted on a popular Facebook page has already reached an astounding 19,000 likes and more than 8,000 shares.
As a security guard, it is their duty to provide a sense of security and safety within an establishment. They are the ones responsible for the welfare of their clients as well as their customers within the premises.
According to a report published on Inquirer, as of April 2016, there is an estimated number of 500,000 licensed private security guards all over the country. Despite their large and continuously growing figures, some private employees deny them their legal benefits.
Although security guards put their lives and limbs on the line in the performance of their duties, they are, sadly, often underpaid and deprived of the benefits that private employees are entitled to under the law.”
Security guards in the Philippines often work extended hours in poor working conditions. On top of that, they also don’t get sufficient break times.
Regardless of the physically exhausting and mentally draining job, a security guard gets little to no compensation. In fact, security guards in the Philippines receive lower salary than those who work abroad.
According to Payscale.com, a security guard in the country earns an average of PHP 15,000 a month. This means that he only makes about PHP 50 per hour, which is a meager pay considering the inherent danger involved in their work.
